Resolving pain, cell by cell
Our Research
We are a pain research laboratory dedicated to understanding how pain and itch signals are encoded in the spinal cord. Our ambition is that better understanding will foster new therapies for humans and the animals that live alongside them.
We work across three themes
01 Spinal circuits for pain and itch
02 Molecular technologies
03 Cross-species translation
Our Values
Our lab is built on five values, developed together as a team:
01 Creativity.
We choose science that engages us. Curiosity drives good questions, unexpected connections, and research worth doing.
02 Reproducibility
We take our own findings seriously enough to try to disprove them. We do not fix on an idea before the data is in and scrutinised.
03 Transparency
We make our data open and our methods obvious. We follow available best practice guidelines for reporting and sharing.
04 Responsibility and respect
We bring a collegiate attitude to everyone in the lab, regardless of career stage.
05 Ethical practice
We work with animals because it is currently necessary to understand pain at the level of cells and circuits. We take that responsibility seriously. In all settings, animals in our research are treated to the highest possible standard.
